The Journal of Indian Ocean World Studies (JIOWS) is a dynamic, field-leading venue for original research in the humanities, social sciences, and related disciplines that contribute to an understanding of the Indian Ocean World (IOW) and its constituent parts, from early times to the present day. Explicitly interdisciplinary in scope, it publishes refereed papers, as well as shorter non-refereed reflections, by both emerging and established scholars from around the world.
Established in 2017, the JIOWS is published twice annually by the Johns Hopkins University Press and the McGill University Library. The latest issue, as well as previous issues, can always be found on the McGill Library website. The most recent issues are also available on the Johns Hopkins UP website and Project Muse.
The JIOWS is a platinum open access journal, meaning neither authors nor readers are charged. Authors retain copyright under a CC-BY-NC-SA license, so that they can share and adapt their research in future. Submission guidelines are available here.
