Julien Greschner is a MA Candidate in Geography and an IOWC graduate student affiliate under the supervision of Prof. Jon Unruh. His research is titled “Solutions to Poverty According to Those Who Live It: Case Study in Kisumu, Kenya.” The project focuses on poverty/inequality in East Africa and explores local understandings of poverty reduction strategies by looking at the specific case of the Manyatta area located within Kisumu’s “slum belt,” a group of informal settlements on the outskirts of the city. The project uses interviews to investigate not only local residents’ ideas on ways to improve the quality of life in their area, but also the rationale behind the ideas proposed.
