IOWC Research Associate: Thomas Vernet

Thomas Vernet, who gained his PhD from the Sorbonne ("Les cités-Etats swahili de l'archipel de Lamu, 1585-1810. Dynamiques endogènes, dynamiques exogène" - under revision for publication) is Associate Professor (maître de conférences) in early-modern African history at the Université Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne. A member of the laboratoire Centre d'Etudes des Mondes Africains (CEMAf), a combined Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS) and Université Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne research group.

His main field of research is the East African coast and the Western Indian Ocean ca.1500-1820, particularly the Swahili World, notably the Swahili city-states within Indian Ocean trade networks, slave trade and slavery on the East African Coast, power and social change in Swahili society, littoral-interior relations and Portuguese expansion and impact. He works mostly on Portuguese archives from the Portuguese empire in Asia, as well as French archives linked to the Mascarenes, Swahili accounts and many other material.

Dr. Vernet is associate editor of Afriques. Débats, méthodes et terrains d'histoire, an online and peer-reviewed journal dedicated to the history and archaeology of Africa before the nineteenth century (http://afriques.revues.org). He is a member of the ANR research project MeDIan - Les sociétés méditerranéennes et l'océan Indien (http://median.hypotheses.org) and was a research associate to the Truth and Justice Commission of Mauritius, which investigated slave trade and slavery related to Mauritius Island. He co-organized two international conferences in 2010 and 2011: Slave trade, slavery and transition to indenture in Mauritius and the Mascarenes 1715-1840 (University of Mauritius) and Portugal and Africa.
