Laura A. Johnson

Laura, who is from the Bahamas, is studying for a double major in History and Art History at McGill. She holds a certificate in Art & Its Markets(2006)from Sotheby’s Institute, London, England.
An experienced organizer, Laura has held summer jobs with the Law firm of Higgs & Johnson, and the Accounting firm of Ernst & Young – both of Nassau, the Bahamas.
At McGill, Laura is a member of a number of student associations including the ‘Black Students Network,’ the ‘African Students Society’ and ‘Caribbean Student’s Society’. She is also active in raising awareness about gender based violence and funds to fight it: In 2005-2006 she helped to raise $20,000 CAN for local and international charities that supported or protected the victims of gender based violence.
As well as assisting in the organisation of the Indian Ocean World Centre’s conference on Sex, Power and Slavery, to be held from 19-21 April 2007, Laura is currently researching the history of dancing girls in Islamic countries.
