“Pirates, Brigands, and Smugglers in the Indian Ocean World.”

We invite papers on any aspect of the history of pirates, brigands and smugglers in the Indian Ocean World, defined as a macro region running from Africa through the Middle East, South and Southeast Asia, to the Far East and Australasia, from early times to the present day. Those interested in submitting papers for the above conference should send a tile and 1-2 paragraph abstract to Gwyn Campbell (gwyn.campbell@mcgill.ca) by 15 December 2017.

The conference will be held at the Indian Ocean World Centre (IOWC), McGill University, in Montreal, Canada. Registration will be $200 ($100 for students). Participants will have to pay for their own travel and lodging, but the IOWC can supply a list of hotels that offer reduced rates for visitors to McGill. It is planned to publish selected papers.
