The Indian Ocean World Centre (IOWC) at McGill University is proud to invite you to participate in the Second IOWC Graduate Interdisciplinary Conference on Africa, to be held at McGill on 27-28 April 2009. The conference is open to graduate students in the social sciences, humanities and sciences, natural sciences or any related fields dealing with any historical period on Africa, or the African off-shore islands (Madagascar, Zanzibar etc.). In order to ensure the relevance of the conference however, papers in the natural sciences should address the human impact on or by the study subject.

Paper proposals should include:

  • Full name and contact address of the student
  • Area of study
  • Name of supervisor(s)
  • Title and brief summary (maximum 300 words) of the paper, informing about the subject, period, and region the applicant wishes to discuss, as well as the approach he or she would like to take to the subject.

Papers using an interdisciplinary approach are particularly welcome. The deadline for submission is 15 March 2009.

The papers presented at the conference need not necessarily represent completed works. Participants could choose to present part of their research work, a work in progress or a particular aspect of it. Since the conference is designed as an ideal interdisciplinary platform, graduate students could use it as a sounding board to discuss their topic with their peers.

There will be a 15$ registration fee for this conference.

To submit a proposal, or for further information, please write to Facil Tesfaye at iowc@mcgill.ca.
